Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

General Therapy Questions

1. What is CBT?
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is a structured, evidence-based talking therapy that helps you understand how your thoughts, emotions, body sensations and behaviours are connected whilst exploring patterns we may have developed over time and offers tools to manage these patterns if they have become unhelpful.  Please see CBT section for more details.

2. What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a therapy originally developed for PTSD treatment but has a growing base of research in many other areas now too. It helps the brain process distressing memories using bilateral stimulation (e.g. eye movements or taps), so they become less emotionally charged and thoughts and beliefs become more adaptive.  Please see the EMDR section for more information.

3.  What are somatic/body based interventions?

Somatic and body based interventions are therapeutic approaches which focus directly on the connection between the mind and the body by tuning into bodily and building awareness of body responses.  Various intervetions can be drawn on to create shifts in our nervous systems such as body scans, interoception training, grounding and centring exercises, titration and pendualtion exercises and breathwork.  Please see the Somatic/body based interventions section for more details.

3. How do I know which therapy is right for me?
This will be discussed during the initial assessment. Depending on your needs, symptoms, and goals, we may use CBT, EMDR, or an integrative approach combining elements of both.  Somatic and body/based interventions can be easily integrated within all approaches.

Getting Started

15. How do I book an initial consulation appointment?

You can contact me via my email address: marie-louise@feltsensepsychotherapy.co.uk or via the contact form on the home page to arrange an initial consultation.  Initial consulations are free of charge and can last up to 15 minutes.  Please ensure you have a confidential space in which to carry out the consulation.  These are usually done via telephone so please let me know the best number to contact you on.  The purpose of this initial consultation is to give you the opportunity to share a brief outline of what your current difficulties are and to discuss some ways therapy may be able to support you.  You may also have some questions you wish to ask me too.  If you wish to proceed with therapy, at this point we can discuss availabilty and we can look to book in our first appointment.

16. What happens in the first therapy session?
The first session is an assessment where we will discuss your goals, background, and what brings you to therapy. We’ll decide together on the best way forward and which approaches we feel might support you in getting to where you want to be.

17. Is there a waiting list?
I aim to offer appointments as soon as possible, but waiting times may vary depending on current availability. Please get in touch for current information regarding availabilty.
