EMDR

EMDR is a scientifically validated therapeutic approach designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories and managing emotional and psychological difficulties.  EMDR was originally designed to treat PTSD and there is a strong evidence base for the treatment of PTSD and trauma and a growing evidence base in many other areas such as OCD, phobias, panic disorder, performance anxiety, complex grief, and chronic pain.  EMDR uses a model known as Adaptive Information Processing which works by changing the way the brain has processed traumatic memories, beliefs and feelings.  This involves focussing on images, thoughts and feelings related to the distressing material whilst using bilateral stimulation usually through eye movements or taps in order to process distressing images so they truly feel as though they are finally in the past and new and adaptive information can be accessed.  More information can be found on the EMDR Association UK website.
